Most people know Beatrix Potter as the creator of Peter Rabbit. I know what you’re thinking… she’s famous, so why is this on Hidden Lake District!?

Well… what most people don’t know is how she helped shape the Lake District you see today.

Although she has blessed us with some of our favourite children’s books — the ones that were either read to us or we read to our kids — her involvement in the Lake District had an incredible effect that deserves just as much recognition as her writing.

Before she became known for her stories, Beatrix Potter was already deeply connected to the countryside. She spent much of her life in and around the Lake District, visiting on family holidays and later choosing to live here permanently. Over time, what began as admiration for the landscape turned into something much more committed. She didn’t just love the Lakes — she invested in them.

As her writing became successful, she gained financial independence at a time when that was rare for women. That independence gave her something even more powerful than fame: choice. And she chose the Lake District.

Rather than simply enjoying the scenery, she began buying farms and areas of land across the region. Not for development, but for preservation. She became increasingly involved in farming life too, learning about traditional rural practices and working closely with local farming families.

It was this combination — financial freedom, deep affection for the landscape, and a genuine understanding of rural life — that allowed her to do something quite remarkable.

She began purchasing land with a clear purpose: to protect it.

Much of this land was later left to what is now the National Trust after her death in 1943. In total, she left thousands of acres of farmland and numerous properties, helping to preserve large parts of the Lake District from development. It is no exaggeration to say that many of the views, footpaths and working farms people enjoy today exist because of those decisions.

One of the most important parts of her legacy is her work in protecting traditional farming, particularly the Herdwick sheep. These hardy sheep are perfectly suited to the Lake District fells, and Beatrix Potter became a passionate supporter of their continued breeding and survival. She didn’t see farming as separate from the landscape — she saw it as part of it.

That perspective is one of the reasons the Lake District still feels the way it does today. The patchwork of fields, stone walls and grazing sheep isn’t accidental. It is the result of generations of farming, yes — but also the result of people like Beatrix Potter recognising its value and choosing to protect it.

Standing in the Lake District now, it’s easy to take that for granted. The views feel timeless, as if they’ve always existed in exactly the form we see them. But the truth is more complex. Without her involvement, parts of this landscape could easily have been lost or changed beyond recognition.

There’s something quite striking about that when you really think about it.

A woman known for writing stories about a mischievous rabbit in a blue jacket also helped safeguard thousands of acres of real countryside for future generations. It’s a pairing that doesn’t immediately make sense, but somehow feels very fitting.

I find myself looking at the landscape a little differently knowing that. There’s a quiet kind of gratitude in it — not just for the beauty of the place itself, but for the people who made sure it would remain.

And I have to admit… I’ve got a new-found respect for her. Not just for Peter Rabbit, but for using her success to quietly help preserve one of the most beautiful places in the world for the rest of us to enjoy.

Elterwater is known for its beautiful walks, cosy pubs and spectacular views, but according to local folklore, it was once home to something a little more unusual.

A Boggle.

If you’ve never heard the term before, a Boggle is a creature from northern folklore, often described as a mischievous spirit or ghost. Stories vary from place to place, but they’re usually said to appear unexpectedly, cause trouble, or give travellers a fright.

According to local legend, Elterwater Common was once haunted by a Boggle that would appear to people crossing the common. Exactly what it looked like seems to depend on who was telling the story, but one thing remained consistent — nobody was particularly keen on meeting it.

Like many Lake District tales, it’s difficult to separate fact from folklore. Was there really something lurking on the common, or was it simply a story passed down through generations to explain strange sights, sounds and shadows in the dark?

We’ll probably never know.

Thankfully, the only thing you’re likely to encounter on Elterwater Common today is a fellow walker or a particularly confident Herdwick sheep. But next time you’re crossing the common, it might be worth keeping an eye on the shadows… just in case.

Most people visit Tilberthwaite for the walks, old quarries and spectacular views. But hidden amongst the landscape is something far older and, arguably, far more intriguing.

Just a short distance from the track sits the Ting Mound — an ancient meeting place believed to date back to the early medieval period, possibly between the 7th and 10th centuries. Today it looks like a grassy mound with a series of terraces cut into its sides. Easy to overlook. Easy to walk straight past.

But over a thousand years ago, this may have been one of the most important places in the valley.

The word “Ting” comes from the Old Norse word “Thing”, meaning an assembly or meeting. Across Viking-influenced parts of northern Europe, Things were places where communities gathered to settle disputes, discuss local matters and make important decisions. The Ting Mound at Little Langdale is thought to have served exactly this purpose. Its Norse origins fit perfectly with the strong Viking influence still found throughout the Lake District today.

What makes the mound particularly interesting are the terraces that can still be seen around it. The top forms a flat platform, with a series of stepped levels surrounding it.

While nobody knows exactly how the space was used, it is often suggested that those of higher status would have gathered nearer the top, while others stood on the lower terraces below. If that was the case, I suspect I’d have been somewhere near the bottom. Although, on second thoughts, let’s assume I’d have been invited to the top tier. Queen behaviour and all that!

Standing there today, it’s surprisingly easy to imagine the scene. Local leaders debating disputes, farmers gathering to hear decisions, and news travelling across the valley long before phones, emails or village Facebook groups existed.

The mound is often compared to Tynwald Hill on the Isle of Man, another Norse assembly site, which adds weight to the theory that Viking settlers established it centuries ago.

Nowadays, the only discussions you’re likely to hear are walkers deciding where to stop for lunch. But if you find yourself exploring Tilberthwaite, it’s worth taking a moment to stand on the terraces and imagine the conversations that once took place here.

After all, it’s not every day you stumble across what was essentially the Lake District’s version of an open-air parliament.

Imagine walking into a café, helping yourself to a drink and a slice of cake, and then paying without anybody watching. No cashier. No card machine operator. No one checking what you’ve taken.

It sounds unlikely, but tucked away in the Lake District you’ll find honesty boxes, sheds and cafés built entirely on trust.

An honesty shed is a simple, self-serve stop where you’ll find homemade treats, hot and cold drinks, or local produce left out for you to enjoy and pay for. There are no staff, no tills, and no one checking what you’ve taken — just an honesty box and the expectation that visitors will do the right thing.

While the idea might seem unusual at first, honesty sheds have become a much-loved part of life in the Lake District. They reflect something many people associate with the area: a strong sense of community, trust and kindness.

You’ll often spot them along quiet walking routes, near farms and smallholdings, tucked into valleys and beside some of the region’s softer trails. Some are easy to find, while others feel like a hidden discovery waiting to be stumbled upon.

I am going to share one of the first honesty cafes I have come across with you, but the truth is that half the joy comes from simply keeping your eyes open for these little treats. The best honesty sheds often appear when you least expect them — offering not just a cup of tea or a slice of cake, but a small reminder that sometimes trust really does work.

Muddy Boots Honesty Café — Elterwater Park

On the path through Elterwater Park, heading towards Chesters by the River, you’ll first come across a small outdoor stall — ice cream, chocolate, cold drinks. It’s exactly the kind of place that makes you think, “I’ll just stop for a second.” And most people do.

But don’t stop there.

Just around the corner, tucked inside the old stables, is something you could easily miss — and that would be a real shame.

The stables have been quietly transformed into a cosy honesty café, and it’s one of those places that makes you pause in a slightly different way. Inside you’ll find booth-style seating, blankets, cushions, and even a fire for those classic Lake District days when the weather is more “drizzle” than forecast.

It doesn’t try too hard. It doesn’t need to.

You’ll find homemade cakes and traybakes, tea and coffee-making facilities, and a selection of cold drinks. There’s even beer available — just call the number on the board and the owners will bring it over to you. Which, if anything, just adds to the charm.

And that’s really the point of it. There’s something unusual — and quietly brilliant — about a place like this. No staff hovering, no tills beeping, no pressure. Just a space, a kettle, a fire, and the assumption that people will do the right thing.

And somehow, they do.

It becomes more than just a stop for a drink. You sit down “for five minutes” and suddenly you’ve warmed up, had a slice of cake you didn’t plan on eating, and are seriously reconsidering your schedule for the rest of the day. (The tiffin, in particular, is dangerous — in the best possible way.)

In a place built entirely on trust, that feeling stays with you long after you’ve left — and that’s probably the most impressive thing about it.

Where to find this gem

The honesty café sits along the route between Chesters by the River and Little Langdale, right in the middle of Elterwater Park.

You can also reach it from the A593 towards Coniston, just before the turn-off for Little Langdale.

It’s easy to walk straight past if you’re focused on the view — but slightly harder to forget once you’ve discovered it.

Little Langdale is one of the quieter valleys in the Lake District but hotspots like Cathedral Caves, Slater’s Bridge and Three Shires Stone/Inn are what put it on the map. While it is not quite as famous as its big brother, Great Langdale, it is one of the most photographed corners of the Lake District and holds stories many visitors never hear.

Little Langdale has a rich history of mining and quarrying. In the 17th century, quarrymen working in nearby Tilberthwaite built a slate packhorse bridge across the River Brathay, creating a better route for local workers and communities. The bridge is made up of slate pieces and one huge boulder/slab of slate that connects the far side. This is what we know as Slater’s bridge – “the most picturesque footbridge in Lakeland” (Alfred Wainwright). Each year, thousands of visitors walk over this bridge and stop to take photos not knowing its folklore.

I was walking past the bridge one day with Jonny (my partner) when he asked if I knew the story of Slater’s Bridge. According to local folklore the quarrymen had been working on the bridge and went home for the night. The next day when the men returned, they found an enormous slab of slate had been placed at the end of the bridge with no sign of hoof prints from a horse or any struggle. There is no physical way for one man to carry this piece of slate alone and so it became known as the devil’s stone… Spooky! This wonderfully strange story has been passed on through generations and will continue for many more.

So next time you’re wandering through Little Langdale and crossing Slater’s Bridge, take a moment to look beyond the view and think of this story. After all, it’s not every day you stumble across a piece of landscaping allegedly designed by the Devil himself!

One of the many locations to claim a connection to King Arthur and the round table is Eamont Bridge. The site is just to the left of the A6 before it crosses the A66 and not far from junction 40 on the M6.
